Sanbang san literally means “mountain-rom mountain” because it has a grotto-cave which look lile a small room. Mt Sanbang is 395 meter high bell-shaped inactive volcanic mountain composed of trachyte rocks. There are rare plants growing on the cliffs of Mt. Sanbang that is protected as National Preservation no.376. Because of its unique outlook that it stands out from a distance, has a number of interesting legends attached to it. The most interesting legend i that of Seolmundae Halmang, who created Jeju Island, and her sons, the 500 Generals. One day, the oldest brother went hunting and shot an arrow into the open air out of frustration where he kept failing, Unfortunately, the arrow hit the Great Jade Emperor in his side, and the angry emperor pulled out a rock from the top of Mount Halla and threw it. The place where the rock was pulled from became the crater lake of Baekrokdam and the thrown rock became Mount Sanbang. The the circumference of the crater in Baekrokdam is actually the same as that of Mount Sabang and they are made of the same rock type.
Mid-way to the top of the bell-shaped Mount Sanbang is Sanbanggul (Sanbang cave). In Sanbanggul sits a statue of Buddha, and the water that drops from the roof of the cave is believed to have medicinal properties. If you want to climb to the top of Mount Sanbang, you should take the path that lends to Yonghaedong in Deoksuri, at the back of the path leading to Sanbanggul.
因山内有房状的洞窟而得名为山房山。其山高为395米，以钟状火山粗面岩质安山石来构成。岩石上滋生着珍稀植物，现被指定为天然纪念物第376号而受到保护。 因为它独特的形状，从远处也很容易辨认。也许是因山房山的外形所致，这里留传着很多神奇的传说。其中具有代表性的就是学门大奶奶和五百将军的传说。建济州岛的雪门大奶奶，有叫五百将军的五百名儿子。有一天，五百将军中的老大去打猎，因为没达到猎物，一怒之下把箭射向天空。但不巧的是，他射出的箭伤到了玉皇大帝的腰部，发怒的玉皇大帝把汉拿山山顶的岩峰拔出来扔到一边。因此，岩峰被拔掉的地方如今成为白鹿谭，扔掉的岩峰成为山房山。实际上，因白鹿谭火山口的周长与山房山的周长相同，而且岩石的质地也相同，所以更会让人感觉新奇无比。
在钟形山房山山腰部分有山房窟，在窟内安置了佛像。也有人把从洞顶岩壁上滴落的水珠作为矿泉水饮用。如果您想登上山房山山顶，建议您从山房窟后面的德修里龙海洞向上攀岩。
