Climbing Mount Halla is truly the crown of any trip to Jeju but it might require too much exertion for those who plan a relaxing Jeju trip to climb all the way to Baekrodam, the crater lake at Halla’s peak. For them, climbing an oreum is the perfect alternative. There are so many oreum on Jeju that you cannot hike all of them even if you climb one a day for a year. Most have a low altitude so are easily climbed and walkers can enjoy the scenery on their way. Amoung them, Geomun Oreum is said to be the best
Geomun Oreum, named so as it looks black (geomun) with its thick forest, is divided into two gumburi (craters in the Jeju dialect) with a ridge joining them. The Geomun Oreum lava tube system was registered as a World Natural Heritage Site in 2007 and volunteers and the provincial government preserve its natural beauty. Because of this, all hikers on the oreum must be accompanied by a guide and reservations are required as only 300 walkers can visit each day. Along with its magnificent natural scenery, at the oreum is home to many wild flowers, such as wild hydrangea, wild berry and thistle. The guides are trained to answer questions and tell the hidden stories of Geomun Oreum.
